As do most visitors, we went to Florence for its art and culture. We went to the Uffizi and Bargello galleries, and the Boboli and Bardini Gardens. Despite the presence of a three-year-old, no statues were harmed during our visit. The kiddo noted that Michelangelo's Bacchus has "grape hair," and that his Mercury "points at the ceiling." Photos aren't allowed in the major Florentine museums, so if you want to see the art you'll have to go to Florence (or look at real webpages)
.
While the crofters were visiting other museums and the Duomo, some of us walked all over the garden district, enjoying nice views of the Tuscan hills and the city. We were searching for good fountains, but only some of them were running (austerity measures, perhaps?). We did find a charming carousel.
One of the themes of the aesthetics and agrarian philosophy classes is "taste of place," so two of the crofters had an assignment to find a restaurant that specialized in local foods. We enjoyed a delicious banquet, with the staff people cooking produce they retrieved from a barrel by our tables. Way to go, crofters!
Though we didn't have a room with a view of the Arno, we did have a room with a view (or at least a big window). I kept expecting some nice gentlemen to insist that we trade for their view of the river...or maybe that was in a book I read.
