Dolomiten, Dolomiti, Dolomites

The group rented a bus yesterday to take a day trip to the Dolomites.  These craggy limestone mountains are characterized by pale, rosey rock surrounded by green meadows and forests.  The region is composed of a variety of unique valleys, previously isolated but now connected by high passes.  We drove on high, scary roads, had a scenic coffee break near the Rosengarten group, rode the Pordoi cable car to a high cliff, did a little hike in the Sella pass, and visited the interesting Museum for Ladin Culture.  Ladin is an ancient language still in use in small areas of the South Tyrol (making those villages trilingual).

We were all a little tired by the end of our day because we'd been up since the 4 a.m. earthquake which hit south of Verona.  We only had a mild, but long, period of shaking (as well as a couple of aftershocks), but it was disorienting enough to keep us awake.  Sadly, some people lost their lives further south, and some cities lost some of their historic buildings and art.
